Roger’s Road is a community located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Historically Rogers Road was a community populated by black farmers and, since the mid-19th century, has been home to many African American families. Today, Roger’s Road is a diverse community which includes Latino, Thai, and African American families which have been disenfranchised by environmental racism. In the 1970s, a landfill was built on land beside the nearby Eubanks Road despite protests from the community. It was promised that once the landfill was full it would be shut down and turned into a recreation center; however, in the 1980s, instead of shutting down, the landfill was expanded. This created outrage in a community which felt betrayed, and, in 2006, this outrage was worsened by the announcement of a new waste transfer station to be built at the site.
